AFFORDABLE HOUSING: MINISTER CALLS ON DEVELOPERS, FINANCIERS TO SUPPORT INITIATIVE

The sector Minister, Hon. Kenneth Gilbert Adjei, has called on players within the built industry, notably developers and financiers, to prioritise the development of affordable, low-cost housing to restore the dignity of Ghanaians.

Speaking at the National Thought Leadership Forum organised by Media General on the theme “From Blueprint to Brick: Making Affordable Housing Work, Hon. Gilbert Adjei emphasised the government’s commitment to affordable housing, adding that many interventions are being pursued to bridge the affordability gap.

The Minister mentioned scaling up the National Homeownership Fund, leveraging on the Fund’s strategic partnerships with key financial institutions to introduce long-term, low-interest mortgage options, as well as the introduction of rent-to-own schemes and developer-backed payment plans, as some of the interventions being undertaken to make housing finance accessible to the citizenry.

Beyond these interventions, the Minister had a plea for key stakeholders within the built industry:

  • To Developers: Expand beyond luxury-only developments and design homes for the ordinary Ghanaian.
  • To Financiers: De-risk affordable housing projects and create financial products tailored to the incomes of our people.
  • Making affordable housing work is not just a sector Ministry priority; it is Ghana’s collective agenda.
