His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama performed the groundbreaking ceremony and laid the first brick to commence the construction of a housing development called the “Green City” in Dedesua in the Bosomtwe District of the Ashanti Region.
The 200-acre project will be executed by the State Housing Company Limited (SHCL) and will deliver over 1,000 housing units within a carefully planned integrated community. The development combines modern architecture with environmental sustainability and it is designed to set a new standard for urban development in Ghana.
Green City is structured as a complete modern gated community. Beyond the housing units, it will include essential infrastructure and services such as schools, health facilities, recreational areas and commercial spaces to create a thriving community. The project will also create jobs, stimulate local enterprises, and generate lasting economic opportunities across the Bosomtwe District.
Delivering his address, President Mahama said Ghana’s housing challenge has become more pronounced and demands clarity of purpose and decisive action. “If we do not act urgently and at scale, tomorrow’s housing crisis will far exceed what we are experiencing today,” the President stated.
The President commended the Asantehene for his unflinching support for the project, citing the provision of the project land as a demonstration of his unwavering dedication to the welfare and advancement of his people.
In his statement, the sector Minister, Hon. Kenneth Gilbert Adjei explained that the Green City project was not just about building houses, but also about creating dignity, stability, and opportunities for citizens through access to decent accommodation.
Hon. Kenneth Gilbert Adjei said the framework for the Dedesua Green City project was specifically designed to ensure that teachers, nurses, doctors and other civil servants acquire homes under flexible and affordable arrangements.
At the event, President Mahama also unveiled a GH¢3 billion revolving housing fund targeted at public sector workers like nurses, teachers, doctors and civil servants. Under the scheme, state-backed developers including SHC will access credit to build, while commercial banks provide individual mortgages repayable over 15-20 years, with houses priced in cedis rather than dollars to shield buyers from currency fluctuations. The President called it “a Ghanaian solution designed for our Ghanaian reality”.
Daasebre Osei Bonsu III, Mamponghene, who represented the Asantehene, urged SHC to ensure successful completion, stressing that “people expect execution, accountability and results” not unfulfilled promises.
