ENGINEERING COUNCIL TASKED TO UPHOLD HIGH PROFESSIONAL STANDARDS

The Minister for Works, Housing, and Water Resources, Hon. Kenneth Gilbert Adjei, has charged the newly inaugurated Technical Committees of the Engineering Council to uphold the highest standards of quality, safety, and integrity in engineering practice in the country.

The Minister emphasized that the strategic importance of the committees is to ensure the safety of citizens and maximize returns on public infrastructure investments as mandated by the Engineering Council Act 819.

The Minister made these known in a speech read on his behalf by Mr. Ebenezer Sam, the Director of Human Resource Management of the Ministry at the inauguration of six Technical Committees of the Engineering Council to regulate and advance the engineering profession in Accra.

With the inauguration of the Technical Committees, the sector Minister indicated that government expects the Council to rid the engineering space of substandard materials, unlicensed practitioners and firms as well as end the practice of poor supervision of engineering works.

“The proliferation of engineering failures, from building collapses to water system breakdowns, is a stain on Ghana’s development effort. It erodes public trust and wastes scarce resources.” The Minister stated.

Ken Adjei urged the committees to work with the Council’s Board and other key stakeholders in the Built Environment to provide the antidote to end the malaise within the engineering space.

In his remarks, the Registrar of the Council, Ing Isaac Bedu indicated that the inauguration of the Technical Committees marks an important operational milestone for the Council. He said the Committees will enable an effective execution of the Council’s regulatory mandate.

The six inaugurated committees are Disciplinary, Legal and Ethics, Education and Training, Finance and Administration, Licensing and Registration, Public and International Affairs and Standards and Professional Practice.
