HON. KENNETH ADJEI LEADS GHANA’S DELEGATION TO UN-HABITAT ASSEMBLY, REAFFIRMS COMMITMENT TO SUSTAINABLE URBAN DEVELOPMENT

The sector Minister, Hon. Kenneth Gilbert Adjei, led Ghana’s delegation at the Resumed Second Session of the UN-Habitat’s General Assembly happening in Nairobi, Kenya.

During the session, the Hon. Minister delivered a statement on behalf of Ghana, reaffirming government’s commitment to advancing sustainable urban development and housing accessibility.

The Minister, on behalf of H.E President John Dramani Mahama , also expressed gratitude for UN-Habitat’s continued support in implementing the New Urban Agenda and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

On Ghana’s housing deficit which currently stands at 1.8m units, with 56.7% of the population living in urban areas, the sector Minister underscored the urgency of structured urban planning and housing accessibility and further outlined national strategies, including the Ghana Smart SDG Cities Programme and the District Housing Programme, designed to drive investment in climate-smart, affordable housing across underserved districts.

As part of the proceedings, he endorsed the 10 Resolutions adopted by the General Assembly, including the Strategic Plan for 2026–2029 and reaffirmed Ghana’s dedication to working alongside Member States, stakeholders, and partners to advance the SDGs, the New Urban Agenda, and the African Union’s Agenda 2063.

Earlier in the day, the Hon. Minister participated in the UN-Habitat Assembly Bureau Meeting as part of the proceedings for the Resumed Second Session of the UN-Habitat’s General Assembly.
