The sector Minister, Hon. Kenneth Gilbert Adjei has inaugurated the Governing Boards of the Water Resources Commission and the Community Water and Sanitation Agency.
The inauguration of the two Boards effectively means that all institutions or entities under the sector Ministry have a functioning Board; a mandatory institutional framework to operate effectively and efficiently.
Water Resources Commission
Hon Kenneth Gilbert Adjei urged the Board to provide strategic oversight that will enable the Commission to among other things;
- Strengthen legal and institutional frameworks to enhance the management and utilization of water resources.
- Instill effective water resources management to all major water users.
- Enhance trans-boundary water cooperation such as the Volta Basin Authority (VBA) and the country’s riparian neighbours to develop joint water management plans.
The Minister noted that a key legacy for the Ministry, Board and Commission will be the signing of the VBA Water Charter which will further enhance equitable and sustainable management of water resources in the Volta Basin.
Community Water and Sanitation Agency (CWSA)
The sector Minister believes it is unacceptable that billions of Ghana Cedis worth of infrastructure investments have not yielded sustainable outcomes due to poor system governance, inadequate financing for operations and maintenance (O&M) and the absence of long-term asset management plans.
Hon. Kenneth Gilbert Adjei tasked the Board to work with management to ensure that all new water projects are designed to be financially sustainable, durable, consistently operational and accessible to all users over an extended period.
“Let service standards, not politics define your decisions. Let value for money, not expediency govern your use of resources.” The Minister emphasized.
