MINISTER ASSURES OF GOVERNMENT’S COMMITMENT TO COMMENCE TAMALE WATER SUPPLY PROJECT

The Minister for Works, Housing and Water Resources, Hon. Kenneth Gilbert Adjei has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to commencing the Tamale Water Supply Project. He gave this assurance during a courtesy call by the European Union (EU) Ambassador to Ghana, H. E. Irchad Razaaly, in his office in Accra.

The Tamale Water Supply Project, which has been in the pipeline for some time, aims to provide a sustainable solution to the water needs of the growing population in the area. The project is expected to improve access to clean water, reduce the incidence of water-borne diseases, and enhance the overall quality of life for residents.

Hon Adjei revealed that Ghana Water Limited has completed the feasibility studies for the project and forwarded them to the European Union (EU) for funding consideration. He added that the Ministry will collaborate with the Ministry of Finance to ensure the successful implementation of the project.

The Minister disclosed that the EU intends to fund other water supply projects in the Northern Region such as Yendi, Sang, Savelugu, Pong Tamale, Diare and surrounding areas in addition to the Tamale water project.  He said this move by the EU is in sync with the government’s desire to expand the water supply in the Northern Region.

He therefore expressed the government’s gratitude to the European Union (EU) for its continuous support of the country’s water sector, particularly in rural and small-town communities and assured of the government’s commitment to ensuring that the project is implemented to demonstrate its dedication to addressing the water needs of its citizens and improving their overall well-being.

On his part H. E. Irchad Razaaly expressed the EU’s commitment to supporting Ghana’s development, particularly in areas such as water supply, agriculture, and job creation. “The Tamale Water Supply Project is a key initiative that aligns with our goals, and we are eager to provide the necessary support to ensure its successful implementation”, he added.

He said the EU’s support for this project is a testament to the longstanding partnership with Ghana that has birthed the urban water project in Tamale and Damongo, valued at 320 million Euros. He also disclosed that the EU has launched the Global Gateway initiative which is a worldwide program supporting critical infrastructure projects, including this urban water project.
